Vaastu Shastra-By Radha Kishan
I am very fond of Vaastu Shastra.Vaastu Shastra is the art of following certain rules to make your home, office or property, a place of peace, happiness and joy.I dont have much deeper understanding about Vaastu Shastra but there are certain things in Vaastu Shastra, which I am sure if not followed may badly affect your day to day life activities.Let me tell you with an example. The person who goes around buying our household junk, actually does a great service to society. What's more,we dont have to go to them but they cycle down to our homes to collect the junk we plan to throw away.Yes,I am talking about the good "Kabaariwala".
However, the irony is that many people are bigger "kabaaris" than the "Kabaariwallahs" themselves.Because they allow their homes to get filled up with throwable junk which consists of scores of useless objects like perhaps a broken tricycle,a chair with three legs, old clothes in metal boxes, old magazines plus half-empty medicine bottles caked with grime.I have even seen a priceless bungalow in Chanakya Puri,in Delhi, whose compound had mounds of bricks and sand left over from the time the house was built many years ago.Inside, some 40 metal boxes or sundooks(iron boxes) lined the walls. So,my advice to people is:If you want to be happy, get rid of all your "kabaar"(waste material).
The question that arises here is what does Vaastu Shastra have to do with "kabaar"?My answer is, a lot. For,objects are lifeless; too many of them deplete your energy. If your home is cluttered with junk, you will live in a state of exhaustion.Which is why Vaastu is dead against storing it in the house.
Vaastu believes that our lives should be linked with living things like humans, animals, plants and trees.Think of two almirahs, for instance one of steel and another of wood. Why does the wooden one look better and feel better?Thats because wood once had life, when it was part of a tree. For the same reason, cotton clothes look and feel better than synthetic ones.
However, there's a practical reason why we should not accumulatee junk in our homes.Thats because city space is expensive.A square foot of our homes costs anything from Rs.50,000 to 1 Lakh. Why should we waste two precious square feet on a broken tricycle that's of no use to us.
If we sell it to a "kabaariwallah",it will be fixed and used by a slum child whose family cannot buy him a new tricycle. But people don't even sell off old chairs and tables they don't need.
The Eskimos have a very good custom. One day in a year is specially kept aside to rid their homes of things they dont need.We too have a similar custom with the great Indian festival "Diwali",traditionally, being the day assigned to get rid of "kabaar".But we seem to have forgotten that.
Vaastu seeks to harness the five elements of nature for human welfare. These are wind, water, fire, earth and space. The junk we accumulate, violates the space element in our lives.Vaastu says we must have space around us.But we don't,when our homes are full of junk.
A wise man once said that our homes should only have two kinds of things. They should either be beautiful or useful. If they are neither, they should be thrown away.
Our homes should be well maintained. Our beds shouldn't be shaky and our chairs must not wobble. Our shoes and chappals should also be in good condition. The weight of the body rests on the bed,a chair,or on your footwear. If their condition deteriorates, you will find yourself living half-heartedly.Unstable beds and worn-out footwear signal a slide towards poverty.
